What inspired you to become a therapist?
What inspired me to become a therapist was two things: a natural skill for listening and also, going through my own personal work in therapy.
When I was very young I liked to listen to people. Friends would come to me and we’d talk and it seemed something natural and intuitive.
And I also had a wonderful therapist and he guided me to the marriage family therapy program that he had started at Chapman University. Therapy really changed my life for the better and I wanted to help others in turn.
Why did you create TrU Wave Psychology?
I started a group called Girls United Together Through Strength for over 20 years. I specialized in a particular area with girls in groups.
At the time, I was working with two kids who had experienced severe sexual abuse. Talk therapy wasn’t working for them, but I knew I had to help these girls somehow.
My doctor had done micro current neurofeedback on me which helped me with my ADHD, anxiety, and memory issues due to lupus, and it really changed my life.
So I became micro current neurofeedback certified and started using it in my practice to help individuals, like those two girls, who needed something more than just talk therapy.
When incorporating micro current neurofeedback in therapy, I am able to prioritize and see areas we need to work on due to the brainwave activity. I am also able to help regulate my clients, particularly those who have an imbalance in their brains often caused by anxiety, depression, and disorders.
TrU Wave Psychology was born out of this use of technology and other techniques, such as EMDR, along with therapy to more effectively and efficiently treat mental health issues, such as trauma, anxiety, depression, and ADHD, that talk-therapy alone could not make great headway on.
What are the most common issues you see?
Some of the most common issues I see my clients struggle with are trauma, ADHD, depression, and anxiety.
Oftentimes, these clients have been in treatment or therapy for years with very little progress on their prognosis. They often feel “stuck,” like they can’t move forward or get better, no matter what they’ve tried.
What makes what we do at TrU Wave Psychology so unique is we combine traditional forms of treatment (e.g., talk therapy) with other forms of treatment such as micro current neurofeedback, EMDR, nutrition, coaching, family therapy, and more to help get long-lasting results faster.
The goal is for our clients to hopefully never come back (unless it is to share happy news with us) because they don’t need us anymore.
Our clients should not be with us for “years” per say, they should be able to get the best treatment that is the right fit for them and then get better so they can start living their best lives.
What insight or advice do you have to others on their healing journey?
I think it’s important to recognize that healing is a journey and it’s ongoing. The further along you get on your journey, it will start to feel better.
It’s not just about healing, it is also about growing and becoming empowered and educated.
This leads to a much more peaceful centered life which leads to happiness overall.
I’m not going to lie, it’s a lot of hard work. But it’s worth it because after you start healing, you will be on the other side of a lot of things in life that you can’t even imagine.
And it’s worth it.
