Is ADHD Medication the Right Treatment For You?

Individuals with ADHD are often advised to take medication to help manage the symptoms of their mental diagnosis. While medication may be the right option for some, it is important to consider the following:

Medication Side Effects

Unfortunately, ADHD medication may cause adverse side effects ranging from:

  • Insomnia

  • Loss of Appetite

  • Headaches

  • Nausea

  • Withdrawal Symptoms (When Dosage Wears Off)

  • Irritability

Some side effects may be temporary while others may be long lasting. Side effects vary based on the prescription, dosage, and the person taking the medication.

There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to ADHD medication as one person’s reaction may be the complete opposite of another person who is taking the exact same medication at the same dosage.

Short Term vs. Long Term Use

Not everyone who starts taking ADHD medication has to remain on them for the rest of their lives. ADHD medication can be used to help someone short term, and with holistic alternatives and life changes, you may find that you may not need ADHD medication long term.

Diet & Exercise

Diet and exercise are some of the most powerful, holistic alternatives to ADHD medication. Certain foods (highly processed foods, refined sugars) and a sedentary lifestyle can actually increase negative and disruptive symptoms of ADHD.

Little, consistent changes, such as a 20-minute walk in nature, eating more whole fruits and vegetables, can have positive impacts on managing ADHD symptoms.

Treatment Programs are Unique to Each Individual

ADHD shows up every individually differently; therefore, treatment programs will also differ between individuals. What may work for one person may not work for another.

It is best to work with professionals who specialize in treating ADHD to help educate yourself on the many treatment options out there.

Medication is not the only solution to managing ADHD symptoms; it is just one of many treatment options.
